This season brought more success for NUIG Ladies Hockey. Our 1st team were Connacht Senior League 1A Winners and Senior Cup Winners and competed in the EYHL 2 League for another season, seeing vast improvements in skill levels as they encountered some of the top teams in the country on a regular babsis. Our 2nds team had a competitive season in the Connacht 1A league also, and narrowly missed out on a spot in the Irish Hockey Challenge finals. Our 3rds had a fantastic season, having a clean sweep and finishing as Connacht Division 2 League Winners.
We had our most successful season to date in 2017/18 with our 1st team winning both the Connacht Senior League and the Connacht Senior Cup. They also qualified for EYHL 2, a prestigious national league. Our 2nds team secured the clubs first ever national title by winning the Irish Challenge Cup.
We reached the plate final at intervarsities in October narrowly losing to DCU and our newly founded 3rds team had a great run in the Connacht 2nd division!
NUIG Ladies Hockey will now have 2 teams competing in the 1st Division as our 2nds team won the Division 2 League, earning themselves promotion for the 2015/16 season. Our 1sts finished joint 2nd in the 1st division.
We competed in the Irish Hockey Challenge for the first time this year, and ended up reaching the final of this national competition. As a result the team wone the "Team of the Year" award at NUIG's annual sports awards.
Our 1sts were finalists in the Connacht Senior Cup.
NUIG hockey team is now the 5th best college hockey team in Ireland in Intervarsities 2012. The intervarsity hockey tournament held back in October by UCC proved the most successful for the NUIG hockey team, as they reached the highest ranking ever coming 5th out of 12 teams. The only team to beat NUIG during their 4 matches over the weekend were the outright winners UCD, again proving how well the team performed throughout the tournament.
A huge effort prior to the tournament by both the players and coaching staff was put in and it most certainly showed that the hard work had paid off. Having won 3 out of the 4 games, NUIG were looking in great form going in to the play-offs. However losing to UCD didn't put a stop to winning ways as NUIG defeated DCU and affirming 5th place in the tournament and also meaning that for next year’s Intervarsities that NUIG would be among the top 6 colleges in the country competing in the new system for the Cup.
A very successful intervarsity tournament was held here in Galway from the 30th Oct-1st Nov 2011. 18 teams from colleges from around the country participated. The Chilean Cup (Ladies) was won by UCD. The Chilean Plate was won by Trinity College who beat NUIG (ourselves) 1-0 in the final in a very competitive match. The Mauritus Cup (Mens) was won by UCD while the Maurius Plate was won by CIT.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped us in hosting which ran smoothly from start to finish, culminating in the famous 'Varsities Ball' on the Tue night which was held in the Ardilaun Hotel followed by Monroe's Live.
