Club profiles: Softball

Softball is the amateur version of the American sport of Baseball, played with a larger ball and lighter bats. The NUI Galway Softball club is in its third year, and joins existing teams in Dublin (UCD), Cork (UCC), Belfast (QUB) and Limerick (UL) in the Intervarsity league. We'll also be playing in some indoor tournaments, against the local club team the Galway Tribes, and (hopefully!) be playing in some open tournaments in the spring and summer.

About our logo. Every baseball and softball club has to have a name, like the Red Sox (Boston), the Yankees (New York), the Giants (San Francisco), the Rays (Tampa Bay, Florida), the Wildcats (UCD). Ours is the "Base Invaders". Hence the logo of Space Invaders characters taking up the fielding positions around the bases of a softball field!

This is the third year of the club's existence, having been set up just before Clubs Day 2009. That year, we finished last [ :( ] in the Intervarsity League with only 3 points, but with a couple of victories over non-university teams including Belfast. In 2010/2011, we hosted an intervarsity tournament, beating several teams en route to a mid-table finish, losing out to local friends/rivals the Galway Tribes in the Plate Final. However, the clubs first success came this year, in late November, when we edged out UCD 2 in the plate final to win our first trophy! Also, victory over the UCC Wildcats lifted us off the bottom of the Intervarsity league, we are now 2nd last!

Several NUIG players have also played with non-college teams during the summer softball season. This year, congratulations are due to NUIG outfielders David Hanley and Steven Barrins, first base player Catherine Swift, and pitcher Breandán MacGabhann, who won two tournaments (the Irish Open Softball Tournament Bowl and the Castleknock Charity Blitz) this year with the Galway Tribes; and NUIG outfielder Ruth Concannon, who won the Irish Open Softball Tournament Cup amongst other successes with Munster.
