This year the Taekwondo World Championships were hosted by TAGB in the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham. The competition brought in thousands of the best competitors from over 20 countries with some coming from as far as Australia and the USA. Last Saturday, NUIG's golfing staff took on the student golf team on the windy links of Connemara Golf Club. This was the first year such a match had been played. The second of four regional IUSA - (Irish University Sailing Association) events took place in Lough Erne Yacht Club, Fermanagh, Northern Ireland on the 10th-12th November. The IUSA Northerns were hosted by our good friends from Queens University Belfast in what was an extremely enjoyable 2 days of sailing soaking up the spectacular scenery that the North has to offer. NUIG faced a formidable opponent today in the form of DIT. The bleachers were full of supporters for the Galway lads in the Kingfisher sports hall. The game started with an impressive outside shooting display from both teams with DIT enjoying a small lead throughout the first quarter. We are only half way through this years first semester and already the club has played a lot of great ultimate. We kicked the year off at Trinity Tea Party up in Dublin and put in a fantastic performance. Our women's team went undefeated and topped their division taking home the Trinity Tea Pot. We sent two men's teams, both put on an amazing display with NUIG 1 coming second and NUIG 2 coming third. 5 of our NUIG students travelled up to Carton House Golf Club to compete against the mighty NUIMaynooth (b). This team consisted of Enda Craddock, Ryan O'Doherty, Colm Hughes, Peter Fleming and Cathal Nolan. The lads competed well, but it was not their day as they lost 4-1. The score flatters the NUIM team as it was a very tight match, which saw NUIG losing matches on the 18th and 20th holes of the tricky Montgomery Golf Course. During the first week of semester one the NUI Galway TKD Club was happy to welcome members new and old, and was itself reminded of the joy involved in a progressive discipline such as Taekwon-Do that can offer so much to the students and the trainers alike.
