Gold and silver for NUIG at Collegiates

Posted by Handball on Wed, 18-03-2015

A five member team from NUIG Handball Club made the trip to Kingscourt, Cavan for the Intervarsity’s 40x20 handball championships from Thursday 29 January to Sunday 1 February.

At the end of four days of absorbing handball the five man team brought back an All Ireland gold and an All Ireland silver medal to NUIG.

The members of the NUIG team were Ian Mc Loughlin, Ciara Mc Manamon, Seamus Conneely, Darren Carter and Ciaran Malone.

The gold medal was won by Darren Carter who won the C title while Seamus Conneely of Nuig had to settle for the silver medal in the A championship.

On his way to the title Darren had to play no fewer than six matches and he saw off the challenge of six fellow handballers to clinch gold for NUG.

In the A championship Seamus Conneely picked up an ankle injury during his quarter final clash. He successfully competed in the semi-final, but in the final against Michael Hedigan of UL the ankle injury flared up and he had to withdraw after the first game.

This was without doubt a very successful championship for NUIG and all the players are to be complimented on how they performed in each of their games, how well they represented NUIG over the course of the championship and how well they gave their support to the organisers by helping with refereeing, keeping the fixture list up to date etc.

All of the other three competitors from NUIG reached their respective semi-finals.

NUIG Handball Club would like to extend their thanks to the Irish Collegiates Handball Association for the fantastic way they organised and ran the championship and if the club can continue to build on the success in Kingscourt the future of handball in NUIG is certainly very bright indeed.

Our thanks also goes to Kingscourt for their hospitality and for making their excellent facilities available for the championship.

NUIG Handball Club is open to all, ladies and gents and training takes place on an ongoing basis. Please keep a close eye on our website for further details of when training sessions will be held.

Handball is a wonderful sport in that it helps to keep you fit, develop wonderful skills and provides the opportunity to make friends not only from all over the country, but also from all over the world.
