Paralympics Homecoming

Posted by Sports Unit on Wed, 28-09-2016

Dear student,

It is with great pride that we celebrate the success of our staff – Dr Eoghan Clifford and Dr Pat O’Leary â€“ following their achievements in the Paralympic Games in Rio. I hope you can join me to show our appreciation at a special homecoming event on the plaza in front of the Arts Millennium Building at 4.30pm today in the presence of Galway Bay FM.

Eoghan took home one gold and one bronze medal in Cycling (in the Men’s C3 Time Trial and C3 3000m Individual Pursuit), while Pat put in an immense performance to make the KL3 Canoe Final and finish sixth in the world. We also celebrate our former Students' Union Manager, Rena McCarron Rooney, who reached the quarter final in table tennis.

It was a significant games for the region – alumna Deirdre Mongan also represented Ireland in the shot put, while Galway native, Eric O'Flaherty, lined out for Ireland in football.

To mark the significant achievements of our local Paralympic athletes, please join me at 4.30pm today in the plaza in front of the Arts Millennium Building to honour their success.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Kind regards,

James J. Browne, PhD, DSc, MRIA, CEng

 A mhic léinn, a chara,

Údar mór mórtais dúinn fáilte abhaile a chur roimh an Dr Eoghan Clifford agus an Dr Pat O’Leary san Ollscoil i ndiaidh a gcuid éachtaí sna Cluichí Parailimpeacha i Rio. Beidh ócáid againn ina n-onóir ar an bplás os comhair Áras Dán na Mílaoise ag 4.30pm inniu in éineacht le Galway Bay FM agus tá súil agam go mbeidh sibh ar fad i láthair.

Bhuaigh Eoghan bonn óir agus bonn cré-umha sa Rothaíocht (i dTriail Ama C3 na bhFear agus sa 3000m Aonair), agus d'éirigh thar barr le Pat i mBabhta Ceannais Canú KL3 rud a chiallaíonn go bhfuil sé sa séú háit ar domhan anois. Cúis ceiliúrtha chomh maith go ndeachaigh iar-Bhainisteoir Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn, Rena McCarron Rooney, chomh fada leis an mbabhta ceathrú ceannais sa leadóg bhoird.

Díol suntais go raibh an oiread daoine ón réigiún seo páirteach sna cluichí. Bhí ár n-alumna

Deirdre Mongan ag caitheamh meáchain d'Éirinn agus d'imir Eric O’Flaherty as Gaillimh sacar thar ceann na tíre seo.

Chun éachtaí na lúthchleasaithe parailimpeacha áitiúla a cheiliúradh, bí linn ag 4.30pm inniu ar an bplás os comhair Áras Dán na Mílaoise.

Táim ag súil go mór sibh a bheith inár dteannta.

Le dea-mhéin,

James J. Browne, PhD, DSc, MRIA, CEng
