NUI Galway into Cup Semi-Final

Posted by Soccer (Women) on Thu, 16-02-2017

A brace from Doherty helped Galway overcome Waterford.

NUI Galway Ladies Soccer faced Waterford IT in the Intervarsities Cup Quarter-Final on Monday, February 13th in Dangan. This is a trophy the Galway girls have never won and went into this game with confidence, after playing a courageous second half against UCD the week before.

The home team started off well, creating many chances. It was only a matter of time before one of the shots would beat the Waterford ‘keeper. It was Michelle Doherty who eventually got the opener, scoring for the third successive game. The Galway girls found lots of space out the wings, where Mollie Farrell and Chelsi Curran constantly used their speed and whipped ball after ball into the box. Next it was Lisa Casserly’s turn to add to her tally, and her smashing effort from the edge of the box was never going to be stopped. The third goal came as the two goal scorers combined, with Casserly playing a through ball into the path of Doherty for her second goal. Laura Carroll was unlucky to see her attempted header go the wrong side of the post after a Casserly corner. 3-0 to the home team at half time.

Louise Creaven in goals had a total of 3 goal kicks in the game, showing the pressure the back four were never under. Alina Cheatham joined Shuana Fox in the centre of defence, and both enjoyed runs through the middle of the pitch. A new formation of 4-1-4-1 had Ciara Lynagh as a protector for the back four, but in the end was never really tested as a defender. Full backs Carroll and Aoife Walsh had a lot of freedom on the wings and found themselves in the oppositions half on many occasions. Sam Taillon was brought back to the middle of midfield and showed great strength and vision to create several chances. Walsh was unlucky to see her shot go inches over the bar when Casserly made a good run into the box and squared the ball to her. Eventually the girls got the fourth goal in the middle of the second half when another Casserly corner landed perfectly on Fox’s head and the ball hit the top corner. Alison McGonagle was as ever strong in the middle of the park and was also unlucky to not get on the score sheet. Emma Horgan replaced Carroll at left back and was solid. She linked up well with Ciara Collins on the left wing to tire out the Waterford girls. Manager John “Beano” Hynes was delighted to see his team back to their dominant selves.

A comprehensive 4-0 win for the Tribeswomen. They are now into the Cup semi-finals of the Intervarsities which will be held in Cork at the end of March.

Team: Louise Creaven, Aoife Walsh, Laura Carroll, Shauna Fox, Alina Cheatham, Ciara Lynagh, Chelsi Curran, Mollie Farrell, Michelle Doherty, Lisa Casserly, Sam Taillon, Alison McGonagle, Emma Horgan, Ciara Collins.
