Posted by Sailing on Fri, 22-03-2024

Varsities this year was held in Schull Sailing Club. It was a great few days for all involved although unfortunately we only got one day of sailing as the weather conditions were too windy and stormy. The one day we did get out sailing our bronze team UG2 sailed fantastically placing second! Some great sailing done by UG 1 considering the conditions, and all in all everyone had a great weekend sailing. To conclude the 23/24 college sailing year we attended the varsities ball..... we all had a a ball! Thanks to everyone involved, all the committee members working hard to make this all happen and of course all the lovely sailors.

Connacht League Division 2 vs Kinvara

Posted by Hockey (Women) on Mon, 11-03-2024

The 3s lined out to take on a very strong Kinvara side on Sunday afternoon. Having not had a match in nearly a month, the squad was full of excitement and ready to put our training sessions to use. We started well and had some lovely forward passages of play but unfortunately, no goals to show for it. Having let in an easy goal at the back post, we were down 1-0 at halftime. A positive team talk and some position changes had us back in the game until two well-worked short corners from Kinvara that left us 3-0 down. Never one to give up, we fought hard and finished strong, but the game ended 4-0 for Kinvara. Despite the loss, there was a noticeable improvement from our last game, some super long balls forward and some excellent saves from both of our keepers. It wasn’t our day, but we are already focused on our final match of the season against Renmore.

EYHL2 vs Ards HC

Posted by Hockey (Women) on Mon, 11-03-2024

The last team we had to play in the EYHL2 was Ards. It was our home game but we arranged with them to play both home and away games on neutral ground. The grounds of the National Sports Campus did not disappoint, making everyone excited and inspired to get into the game. We held Ards off well in the first quarter but their expertise and experience came through as the game went on. Megan Clinton scored our goal of the match and the first goal of the 24/25 EYHL2. The game ended 8-1 to Ards.

EYHL2 vs Lurgan HC

Posted by Hockey (Women) on Mon, 11-03-2024

Our third EYHL2 game was against Lurgan HC up in their home ground in county Armagh. After a long morning of travelling up on the bus, we arrived on site. After the last. two EY games we had played it was important that we kept our morale high and motivated. Lurgan was not in this league last season so we were going in with a fresh mindset but they did have some strong results against other teams in the league. We started off the game strong with a lot of attacking plays but also a lot of defensive ones. It was a physical game and we had a lot of on-target shots but all were saved by their goalie. After a tense 70 minutes of hockey, the game ended with a nil-all draw. Although disappointed that a win was only an arm's length away, we were happy to put some points on the table. The fight for an EY goal this season continues.

EYHL2 vs UCC

Posted by Hockey (Women) on Mon, 11-03-2024

Our second EYHL2 game of the 24/25 season took place in Dangan against the UCC Ladies Team. After playing them twice last season we knew this would be a battle we wouldn't forget. we held a 0-0 scoreline for the first quarter and feeling wee good we stepped out into the second quarter. UCC scored two goals against us in the second quarter. Feeling slightly deflated during half-time Jen Hyde gave us the pep talk we were in need of and we went back out fighting. Unfortunately, the second half did not go our way and the match came to 6-0 to UCC at the final whistle.

Irish Hockey Trophy Round 2 vs Dungannon HC

Posted by Hockey (Women) on Mon, 11-03-2024

Travelling up to Dungannon as the current Irish Hockey Trophy Champions placed a lot of weight on the team's shoulders that they were going to need to leave behind in the dressing rooms. The drive last season gave was invaluable in that we wanted more than anything to repeat our successes for the second year around to make history for Connacht. We arrived at Dungannon HC with brave faces on and got into our warm-up. Jennifer Hyde led us and guided us through the plan for the game. The first ball to hit the net was unfortunately in our goal, leaving us one goal behind them. Shortly after we scored another goal bringing us level. After a questionable decision from the umpire, a goal scored by Megan Clinton was disallowed keeping us at 1-1.  With only seven minutes to go another goal was scored on us leaving us at 2-1 and a goal down to finish out the game. University had no luck in reaching the back of the net leaving us stranded at Round 2 of the Irish Hockey Trophy. We wish Dungannon HC the best in their IHT journey.

Irish Hockey Challenge vs Athlone HC

Posted by Hockey (Women) on Mon, 11-03-2024

After making it to the IHC final last season but losing out to Portrane HC, we were excited to get into the competition. Starting it off with a team not too foreign to us, Athlone HC. The game took place in Athlone Regional Sports Centre the same weekend as our Trophy team travelled to Dungannon. After a physical match of passionate hockey Athlone took the win with a score of 2-1. The team's heart was broken realizing it was the end of their journey in the Irish Hockey Challenge for the 24/25 season.

EYHL2 vs Muckross

Posted by Hockey (Women) on Mon, 11-03-2024

Our first EYHL2 game took place in Dublin against Muckross. After spending the first half of the season comfortable in Dangan we were looking forward to getting out of Connacht to play Muckross and to test out our new panel of players against a Leinster Division 1 team. After a hard-fought match, we came away with a 3-0 loss. Muckross scored all three goals through precision in their penalty corners. This left us hungry to play them at home in Dangan.

Semi Finals of the UCD interversaties Championship

Posted by Table Tennis on Thu, 07-03-2024

This is the biggest tournament of the year in terms of college table tennis. Luckily we had a very strong team this year with 6 determined and passionate players. Cillian KirbyThomas Joyce Anmol JagusteRory McDonnell Asad Wadood Sandro Müller The competition was held in Blackrock college Dublin and our team made the journey up and stayed two nights. On Saturday (the teams event) our team beat all other colleges and fought all the way to the semi final where we faced off against UCD. The team showed great effort but unfortunately lost in the end. However, Thomas Joyce played an impeccable game against the UCD number 2 and beat him in the final set. So even though we lost, we went away with smiles on our faces. On Sunday (the singles event) Asad Wadood got to the semi finals of the Consolation tournament while Thomas Joyce and Cillian Kirby got to the quarter finals of the tournament. This was an excellent result considering there was over 60 top players playing on Sunday.Overall the team did extremely well considering we did not play for the last 2 years. Hopefully we will strive to do the same, and even better next year.

Making Waves: The University of Galway Swim Club at Varsities and Why You Should Keep an Eye on Irish SwimmingIt’s no secret that sports coverage in Ireland varies depending on the sport and who’s playing. This is particularly true in swimming, where expensive underwater cameras and professional editing is needed to make the viewing experience pleasurable for the casual watcher. With a country which already lacks funding and resources in swimming compared to the UK, the coverage of the Irish Nationals (both short and long course) is limited and unlikely to become mainstream anytime soon. Yet Daniel Wiffen, world record holder and the first Irish swimmer to win gold at the World Aquatic Championships, finished a whole ten seconds before his closest competitor in the 1500m freestyle. Swimming is usually counted in milliseconds. He’s got his sights set on Paris 2024 and is a serious medal contender. Many people tuned in when Michael Phelps swam, but this year swimming could become the most important sport for Ireland heading into the Olympics. That’s why you should get ahead of the game and start paying attention to swimming now. All levels of swimming feature fun mishaps and intense races, and the 2024 Irish Swimming Intervarsities were no exception. With the largest turnout since before COVID, and many swimmers from the National Centre Limerick in attendance, the competition was fierce. The gala was hosted by UCC on the 17th and 18th of February and featured over three hundred competitors. The University of Galway Swim Club brought twenty-eight swimmers, some of whom had never competed before. With a charged atmosphere and the loudest supporters there, despite their small numbers the University of Galway swim club put up a good fight. Overall the men’s team placed third, with impressive swims from everyone, especially the medal winners Robin Pfeiffer, Eidhne Kennedy and Jake Van de Beek. The rest of the men pulled their weight, making a total of twelve finals in the shorter events, and placing in the top ten in the 200m events. The women’s team placed fourth, with Ailbhe Mulhall bringing home the bronze in the 200m free. Six of the women made finals, with many others placing high in the long-distance events. Five swimmers competed for the first time, proving it’s never too late to start something new. Overall the team placed fourth, and coaches Sebastien Locteau and Conor Menendez are happy with the result and looking forward to competing again.  Interested in Dipping into Swimming? If you’re interested in learning more about swimming while also joining a lively close-knit group, then look no further than the University of Galway Swim Club. Swimmers of all abilities are welcome, whether you’re a seasoned competitor or swimming for the first time. For those with a competitive edge and a drive to excel, the racing squad offers rigorous training and the chance to compete at the highest levels. With expert coaching and a supportive team atmosphere, you could have the opportunity to push your limits and reach new heights in the pool. But swimming isn’t just about competition – it is also about fitness, fun, and personal growth. That's why the club offers a fitness program tailored to those who want to swim for health, enjoyment, or simply to improve their skills. Even if you have never stepped foot in a pool before, the coaches and swim teachers are prepared to accommodate your goals. The club also offers water polo and water safety, drop by one of the sessions and give it a go.So remember to keep your eye on the Kingfisher and your ear to the ground when it comes to competitive swimming, you might just be able to find a new passion. The EY League Division 2 is a very competitive all-Ireland championship featuring teams from all 4 provinces. It composes of 10 teams split into two pools of 5 where teams will complete 8 games, playing the 4 pool teams both home and away. So far this season, Uni of Galway has played 5 games and registered 3 points. Our highly anticipated home fixture against Muckross was played on the 24/01/24 the result was 2-3 with Muckross coming away with a win. This was a competitive game with Muckross scoring first in quarter 1. This 1 nil win was quickly equalized by us 1-1 our goal was scored by Ailbhe Folan.  Towards the end of quarter 1 Muckross scored with the score for this quarter being 1-2. Muckross had good penalty corner attacks and scored their goals through them, as the game went on our penalty corner defense became much tighter and we defended more attacks. No goals were scored in quarter 2 or 3 showing the sides to be very equally matched. quarter 4 was very exciting as UoG scored from a fantastic play between Ailbhe Folan and Aisling McGrath who put the ball in the net. With this yet again equalizing the score the game became 2-2. Each team was tense eager to get another goal. Muckross won a corner and scored by Matthews. This was the final score of the game making it a 2-3 win for Muckross. The girls on both sides played well and we have come away from the game with tactics to work on. This 1-point goal difference allows us to still put a point on the table. We would like to thank the umpires, technical table and any supporters who travelled to watch.Still to come is a trip to Cork to play fellow college side UCC having lost in the home tie previously. We also have home advantage in the return fixture against Lurgan to look forward to and will be hoping to make the most of this edge. The remaining match is the repeat fixture against the other team in our group, Ards HC.written by: Hannah Kelly and Anna O'Hara

Intervarsity Championships 2024 Results

Posted by Weightlifting on Wed, 21-02-2024

Check EKPicture this: the D12 Weightlifting Club in the heart of Tallaght, Dublin, buzzing with excitement on February 10th. It was the kind of day where every clang of the weights and every cheer from the crowd added to the adrenaline-fueled atmosphere. Lifters from all corners gathered, ready to put months of sweat and grind to the test. The stage was set, the competitors were pumped, and the action unfolded with all the drama you'd expect from a heavyweight showdown. Out of the gate, University of Galway student Cormac Maguire set the bar high (literally), snatching a cool 87kg and cleaning and jerking a whopping 115kg. Those numbers earned him a shiny silver medal in the -102kg category. Not bad for a day's work! But wait, there's more! Fellow student Cormac Stapleton wasn't about to let Maguire hog all the limelight. In the -81kg category, he made an 87kg snatch and a gritty 96kg clean and jerk, earning himself another silver medal and adding to the club's medal haul. Then there was Ilir Surdulli, bringing home the bronze in the -89kg category with some seriously impressive lifts. Ilir snatched 97kg and clean and jerked 127kg, for a jaw-dropping total of 224kg. And let's not forget about Masters student Lisa, the newbie who took her first shot at competition and absolutely rocked it! She may have been the underdog, but she held her own, snatching 36kg and clean and jerking 47kg, totaling a respectable 83kg. Not bad for a debut! Of course, none of this would have been possible without the guidance of coaches and University of Galway alumni Evan and Aleksander, who kept the team on track and firing on all cylinders. And a big shoutout goes to D12 Weightlifting Club and Weightlifting Ireland for hosting the event and giving these lifters a platform to shine. So there you have it: a day filled with sweat, triumph, and a whole lot of heart. The University of Galway Weightlifting Club proved once again that when it comes to lifting heavy and making memories, they're a force to be reckoned with.

University Southern Championships

Posted by Sailing on Tue, 20-02-2024

The Southern Championships event that took place in Dingle Sailing Club over the weekend 16-18th February was a great weekend for all participants involved. The event ran smoothly with some great racing taking place over the weekend despite having a later start than anticipated on the Saturday, starting at 13:00 due to very heavy  wind conditions in the morning and heavy fog in Dingle Bay. The wind died down again later on Saturday completely. The sun came out on the Sunday along with perfect wind conditions. Our own team UG1 had some unlucky races on Saturday but had a great day racing in the silver fleet on Sunday winning 3 out of 4 races and coming 4rth in the silver fleet overall. The students then watched the finals from ashore. The gold fleet results were TCD1 in 1st place, TCD2 in second place and UCD1 in 3rd place. The silver fleet results were QUB1 in 1st place, TCD4 in second place and UCC3 in 3rd place. The bronze fleet results were TUD1 in 1st place, MTU1 in second place and QUB2 in 3rd place. The event couldn't have ran as smoothly as it did without all the amazing volunteers, some including the people on start and finish boats, equipment officers keeping all the boats intact and in good shape for the races and of course our amazing captain Lauren Murray pulling the strings.

Purcell Cup Round 2

Posted by GAA - Camogie on Tue, 30-01-2024

The University of Galway Senior and Junior Camogie teams are entering the crucial stages of Championship this week.  Both teams have had a successful campaign finishing top of the table in their respective groups. Our senior Purcell Cup team had a comprehensive win over UCD last week which sees them through to the quarter final against UL in Dangan on Tuesday 31st. The must win game will land our senior camógs one step closer to taking home the silverware, putting an end to the almost six year wait since the university last won the Purcell Cup. If the girls can pull out a win against UL in the quarter final they will reach their third successive finals weekend with the hope of finally adding a medal to the collection after two narrow defeats the previous two years. With strong numbers this year the camogie club entered another highly competitive team who are also in contention to bring home some silverware. Preparations are underway amongst the Uí Mhaolagáin Cup team as they seek a spot in the final after finishing top of the table as the group stages came to a close. After losing out on a place in the final last year, the girls are determined to secure their spot this year. The final fixture for this semi-final is yet to be confirmed. University of Galway has the pleasure of hosting the finals weekend this year in the University of Galway Connacht GAA Air Dome in Bekan, so we are hoping to have a successful week ahead which would see both of our camogie teams through to take part in the finals weekend. Keep an eye on our social media pages to keep up with fixtures so you can come along and show your support for these extremely hard-working ladies!!! Purcell Cup quarter final – 31st Jan. ISAA Indoor Series, Leg 1 DCU

Posted by Archery on Wed, 29-11-2023

The first leg of the ISAA (Irish Student Archery Association) Indoor League was hosted by DCU on November 4th. We had 22 archers competing and for many of our beginners, it was their first competition. The League works off a best 4/6 scores that go toward overall standings so with DCU being first there is always a few nerves and bad shots, but that wasn't the case for the University of Galway Archers. We had many PBs shot at the competition and saw almost all our beginners shoot scores ranking them in the top half of almost all of their respective divisions, squeezing out many shooters with years more experience. We had Dominik Pazdan and Oisin Naughton take the first and second spots in the Recurve Beginner Open categoryRebecca Sofian and Kate Grehan were just edged out of the top 3, taking 4th and 5th in the Recurve Beginner Female.Kamile Pasukeviciute took the top spot in the Barebow Intermediate Female.

Irish Student Open, Trinity Campanike Cup

Posted by Archery on Wed, 29-11-2023

Check - Sports Unit: Our first competition of the year was the Student Open, The Campanile Cup, hosted by Trinity. As this is the Open it has no impact on intervarsity league scores, so it is a great competition in the early season to scope out the opposition and get some competition practice under our belts. We had 10 archers from UG representing the college, with some standout success from: Eveline Nee taking the gold in the Compound Open category,Dominik Pazdan took bronze in the Recurve Beginner Open Category,And the Recurve Mixed Team of Amin Ibrahim, Dominik Pazdan and Bartosz Perepeczo took bronze.
