NUIG Athletics Indoor Intervarsities 10th Feb 2017
A
team of 20 traveled from NUIG to Athlone IT on Friday to compete in the 2017
IUAA Indoor Athletics Intervarsities. This was the largest team NUIG has had in
a number of years and this is down to the hard work put in by coaches Brendan
Glynn (Sprints + Field Events) and Matt Lockett (Distance).
The
day wasn’t all smooth sailing with a number of unfortunate events occurring.
William Flynn pulled his hamstring in his heat of the 400m, in which he would
have been hoping to get to the final. In a freak accident (and new viral
sensation), Aengus Meldon got entangled in a catapulted pole vault practice string
while leading his 800m heat. He ended up finishing 3rd in the heat
but was still permitted to advance to the final. Finally the always exciting
relays didn’t quite go our way. The woman's 4x200m team of Nicole King, Sinead
Tracey, Ciara Barry and Aishling Forkan got DQed after finishing in 3rd
position due to a zone violation. However, all being first years, they have
plenty of time to work out the little issues and progress to the medals in
future competitions. The men's 4x200m team of Eoghan Dobey, Robert Meagher,
Jonah Erugo and Cormac Lynch also could have gone smoother. The baton change from
Robert to Jonah was mistimed and resulted in a collision between the two of
them. In fairness, Jonah recovered quickly with the boys still running a
respectable time of 94.38 to finish in 6th.
Apart
from these it was quite a successful day for NUIG. 2 medals were won with
Damien Landers coming home 2nd in the 1500m in a time of 4.02.7. It
was a very tight finish with Damien missing out on gold by 1 tenth of a second
to DCU's Cillian Kirwan.
Nicole
King, a first year science student, picked up the other medal for NUIG. Her
first time competing for the college, Nicole finished 3rd in the
women's 400m behind DCU’s Sophie Becker and UCD's Aisling Drumgoole.
With
the 2 medals there was also 6 NUIG records broken. Roland Surlis competing for
the first time for the college broke the men's 800m record on his way to 4th
place in a time of 2.00.00. Damien Landers broke the men's 1500m record on his
way to the silver and Mark Carmody who had a very busy day competing in the
long jump and the shot putt, but it was in the 16kg weight for distance where
he broke the NUIG record with a throw of 5.38m.
The
ladies also broke 3 NUIG records. Two of these records went to Aisling Joyce in
the 1500m where she finished 5th in 4.43.80 and in the 3000m where
she ran 10.01.00 to finish just outside the medals in 4th place. The
other record was the 400m record which Nicole King broke (56.70) in her heat on her way to the final.
In
the overall competition the men's team finished 11th with there points
coming from Damien Landers in the 1500m (2nd), Roland Surlis 800m (4th)
and the 4x200m relay team of Eoghan Dobey , Robert Meagher, Jonah Erugo and
Cormac Lynch (6th).
NUIG's
ladies finished 7th overall with points coming from Aisling Joyce in
the 1500m (5th) and 3000m (4th) and Niamh Hennelly also
picked up points in the 3000m where she finished 7th in a time of
11.09.90.
